Beauty Cannot Be Ignored

Memories can be triggered by the simplest things. Visiting Pond Hill Farm today I was greeted by a luscious flower bed of multi-colored hollyhocks. Hardly the garden variety hollyhocks I have known- these hardy stalks towered above me and waved majestically in the calm breeze.

Immediately I was taken back to a summer from my childhood and the backyard Hollyhock Club, so named because of the hollyhocks growing behind the house. My club was very exclusive, only myself and my best friend allowed in the makeshift clubhouse, a refrigerator box lying on its side.

Three sided cut outs along the sides made awning style windows complete with crayon colored flower boxes below them. Only the secret code, H – – – – – – – K (guess what that was) would open the folded shut door on the end of the box to permit access to our secret society.

The Hollyhock Club lasted until the first soaking rain that collapsed our clubhouse. Then we were on to the next adventure. I'll be reminded what that was by a chance encounter on another day.

But hollyhock memories are forever.

"I decided that if I could paint that flower in a huge scale, you could not ignore its beauty."
